Buckeyes in the top 10 for 2018 Georgia standout
Ohio State recently hosted 2018 defensive end Brenton Cox, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound 3-star prospect out of Miller Grove (Ga.) for a visit, and on Tuesday morning he rewarded their efforts by including the Buckeyes in his newly released top 10 list.

As you can see, the list is in no specific order but speculation in the South is that Georgia – which has not offered Cox yet – will be the team to beat when they decide to toss their hat into the ring. Cox is the country’s 14th-ranked strong-side defensive end in the 2018 class.

    Brenton Cox | Stockbridge (Ga.) | ★★★★
There are few players more naturally gifted as a pass-rushing defensive end than the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Cox.

The country’s fourth-ranked strong-side defensive end holds almost 25 offers but the Buckeyes are right in the mix with Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Clemson. Larry Johnson has been working hard on the Stockbridge star and will get his next chance to see him in person soon: He’s expected to visit Columbus for the second time since October the first weekend of March.

    PACKAGE DEAL?

Just like he did last October, Stockbridge, Georgia, four-star defensive end Brenton Cox will join Haselwood on the eight-hour trip to Columbus.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder is considered the fourth-best strong-side defensive end and No. 53 prospect overall in the Class of 2018. He recently included Ohio State in his Top 10 alongside Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Cox and Haselwood are good friends and there's a good chance they could play together in college. But in order for that to happen, Ohio State will also go all-out for Stockbridge four-star wide receiver Marquez Ezzard, who earned an offer from the Buckeyes last month.

"We’re going to play together. I’m talking about 10 times out of 10. For real. That’s happening," Cox told Dawg Nation. "That's my boy right there. He's a great player. We grew up together. He's like my brother."

There's always going to be skepticism when it comes to supposed package deals, as it takes the school having a legitimate interest in both prospects and vice versa. But it's certainly an interesting proposition that would only strengthen the growing Georgia to Ohio pipeline.

Weather you like it or not

One of the Buckeyes’ top defensive end targets in the 2018 recruiting class insists that Ohio State is at the top of his mind along with his home-state school.

So why does it feel like there’s no chance for him to end up in Columbus?

Stockbridge (Ga.) DE Brenton Cox has been to Ohio State for visits twice in the last six months, once in October and once in March, but he told Dawgnation.com’s Jeff Sentell that his family isn’t fond of the idea that he’d leave Georgia. That — along with the weather — gives the Bulldogs a decided edge.

“Staying close to home to my family would be big. That’s really all Georgia really means for me right there. The position I play, the proximity to the family and then I can get some early playing time.”

Cox did tell DawgNation one edge the Bulldogs will have in their corner.

“My family is all 100-percent Dawgs there,” Cox said. “They don’t want me to go out-of-the-state anywhere with that. They all want to see me at Georgia.”

And there’s that pesky, unchangeable, weather.

“I guess it goes well when I bring up Ohio State,” Cox said. “But we are all originally from Tampa in Florida. So my family really doesn’t like the cold. My mom does say this decision is all for me. So she will tolerate it. She said she will keep an open mind about Ohio State. I think she will like it.”

Cox said distance is another factor in those early family talks.

“It is a 9-hour drive,” Cox said. “But then I tell them that you can fly anywhere in the world.”

The Buckeyes remain an option, but it doesn’t really feel like it, does it?
