Ohio State safety commits shutting down recruitment for good?

During the last few months, Ohio State has had a pretty regular battle with its two 2018 commitments at safety.

The problem? They’re really good but live far away from Ohio — in states with major college football programs working overtime to try to flip them. In the case of Jaiden Woodbey, who committed to Ohio State in February, it has been in-state USC, as well as Oklahoma, Washington and others. Josh Proctor, who verballed to the Buckeyes in April, has Oklahoma trying to keep him home and away from Urban Meyer’s awful clutches.

After a March visit to Columbus, Woodbey — a 247Sports 4-star prospect who was struggling with his commitment and had friends, coaches and teachers trying to sway him to stay closer to home — believed he was solid in his pledge and done with recruiting.

“Once I got back here,” Woodbey said in March, “all of that doubt went away. There is no other school that can compete with Ohio State and I don’t care what anyone says. My dad visited with me this time as well and he loved it as much as I did.”

He was back on campus three weeks later for the Ohio State spring game and played host to Proctor, who committed that day. The pair spent the weekend together and began to form a valuable bond as future teammates in the secondary. However, as April turned to May turned to June, more and more doubts crept into Woodbey’s mind, and other schools were capitalizing on that. With speculation about other visits swirling again, he took a much-needed trip to Columbus for Friday Night Lights last week.

Woodbey arrived in Columbus on Thursday, and will is still in town, staying until this Thursday. As of Tuesday, consider the doubts gone … again.

“This visit has helped with everything,” Woodbey said. “Ohio State has broken everything down for me. It’s been incredible.”

Some of those things that needed to be broken down? Other schools telling Woodbey that the Buckeyes planned to move him to linebacker, an idea that seems to have spawned from nowhere other than the imagination of competing coaching staffs. For now, again, it seems Woodbey is entirely content with his decision. He is suggesting that he will not take official visits to other schools, after all.

“There is no more time for recruiting except for Ohio State recruiting,” Woodbey said. “It’s time for development now.”

THAT SHOULD JUST ABOUT DO IT

This spring, sources close to Ohio State four-star safety commit Jaiden Woodbey told Eleven Warriors he was seriously considering a flip to Oklahoma.

How close? We'll never know for sure, but it was just the latest chatter in the expected rollercoaster ride that comes with landing a highly sought-after prospect from the other side of the country.

Those same sources shared with us the Sooners' pursuit of Woodbey had take a serious hit when head coach Bob Stoops suddenly retired in early June. But Woodbey — who included Nebraska, Oklahoma and USC in his Top 4 before he picked Ohio State in February — continued to be asked about his interest in other programs and taking official visits this fall.

Throughout, Woodbey maintained his commitment to the Buckeyes. He took some time away from social media and the fans that constantly nagged him about his recruitment. A return trip to Columbus in March and then another for the Spring Game three weeks later quieted the talk for a little.

That speculation ramped up once around the time of Nike Football's The Opening Finals earlier this month, where Woodbey was supposed to be focused on getting to know his seven future teammates on Team Vapor Speed. Instead, doubts about playing so far from home began to creep back into his mind. Woodbey set up another trip to Columbus for Friday Night Lights, and after a nearly a week on campus, he announced he's shutting down his recruitment entirely.

Sometimes, all you need is a reminder.

"Everything about the visit [made me want to say that now]," Woodbey told Eleven Warriors. "The doubts were basically me coming all the way out from California. It ended all of that."

Though Woodbey has twice previously said he was done with the recruiting process, this is the first time he's said he no longer wants to take any more visits. Instead, he'll focus on bringing St. John Bosco its second-consecutive state title, keeping Ohio State's current class intact and bringing more talent with him to Columbus.

Jaiden Woodbey hits the end zone again
Ohio State’s safety commits continue to excel and find paydirt for their football teams.

With Owasso (Okla.) 4-star prospect Josh Proctor off this week, it was on Jaiden Woodbey to keep the touchdown streak alive and he did just that, with a little help from his friends.

Woodbey’s score, on a fun little lateral, was just one touchdown in a tidal wave of scores against Los Angeles Dorsey. Woodbey’s Braves won easily, 69-14. The Ohio State verbal didn’t play much in the second half, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t work to be done, according to Bosco coach Jason Negron.

“We are going to watch the film and see what we can get better at on both sides of the ball,” Negro said. “There were a lot of mistakes. A lot of times, even in wins, you can find mistakes that you have to fix.”
