Jaiden Woodbey and the non-stop rumors

    It’s happening … again.

Yes, the Jaiden Woodbey talks are heating up again. I told you two weeks ago it was going to happen, and another round of back and forth about the country’s third-ranked safety has begun.

“There will be nonstop rumors about most Ohio State commitments from now until signing day, so just expect them to come,” we wrote. “Woodbey is very solid with the Buckeyes, and ifhe takes other trips you can bet it’d be with an OK from the Ohio State staff.”

The use of the “OK” there was not an accident. In recent weeks, nearly all the discussion about Woodbey has been centered not on the school everyone expects — USC, where his father played — but on Oklahoma, which has come on strong. Sooners “insiders” are predicting a flip from the Buckeyes to Oklahoma, and 247Sports’ Tom Loy, a Notre Dame analyst who spent the weekend in sunny California at a quarterbacks camp, ended the holiday weekend with a crystal ball prediction backing up that assertion.

Woodbey worried months ago that he had committed too early. He also said, following a March trip to Columbus, that all doubt “went away.” He returned to Ohio State three weeks later and was a major part of Ohio State landing a commitment from Oklahoma safety Josh Proctor. Since that trip, though, the same old same old has persisted.

He hears it from people all the time that he doesn’t need to go to Ohio State when there are other options closer to home, closer to the Pac-12 life.

“Every single day,” Woodbey told Land of 10 about people in his ear. “Literally. You can’t really stop it.”

When Woodbey makes a visit elsewhere — and he’s almost certain to — those rumblings are going to intensify. That isn’t comforting for Ohio State fans, but it’s the truth. Fans, friends, and coaches are all telling him different things. It’s a nonstop deluge of a 17-year-old kid being told by people who care about him that he’s made a wrong decision.

To try to assuage any concern for Buckeyes fans, it’s important to know that Woodbey continues to tell Ohio State he’s not interested in flipping, but there’s no doubt that the Ohio State staff is on alert.

Oklahoma is the latest school in what will be a line of schools trying to flip not just Woodbey, but every Buckeyes commit. That’s what happens when every player you recruit is a Top 100 talent.

    SOME TIME AWAY

A few weeks back, Ohio State safety commit Jaiden Woodbey announced he'd be taking a break from Twitter. Rumors of a flip to Oklahoma hit an all-time high, and he was ready for a break from the constant chatter on social media.

“I just felt like I needed to be secluded somewhere," Woodbey told Eleven Warriors. "I felt like by doing that, I'm able to focus on football, execute better and focus on my play rather than my recruitment.”

The 6-foot-2, 204-pound Woodbey committed to the Buckeyes in February following his first unofficial visit. It was the staff's knack for sending defensive backs to the National Football League and the culture of hard work that sealed the deal for him.

“I like how the coaches let me know, 'If you want to work hard and be great, then you gotta come here,'” Woodbey said, noting he's still being recruited by programs like Oklahoma and USC. He plans to get back to Columbus again in the next month or so, though. “I feel like every school is going to give me a good opportunity, but I just feel like Ohio State is going to be the best one.”

This week has offered Woodbey the chance to link up with some of his future teammates. All eight commits in attendance are on Team Vapor Speed, with four-stars Sevyn Banks and Josh Proctor also in the defensive backfield.

“It's fun,” Woodbey said. “I feel like as we go along, we're going to do better and better.”

The team has done just that, and will play for the 7-versus-7 championship this evening.

Jaiden Woodbey sorting through the noise
He’s not been shy about his desire to visit other schools, but Jaiden Woodbey continues to say his heart is in Columbus, Ohio. The country’s third-ranked safety per the 247Sports composite, who was probably the best safety at The Opening a week ago, continues to deal with a number of people trying to change his mind.

“I know Ohio State is where I want to go,” Woodbey told Land of 10. “There are just all kinds of things out there.”

It’s hard to know exactly what he means, but some of the “things” is recruiting from other schools. Woodbey is being told that Ohio State’s plans include moving to him linebacker, which isn’t the case but it’s in his head anyway. When it comes to coaches that you get to know and trust telling you “things,” you almost want to believe them.

There’s a good chance Woodbey will be back in Columbus on July 21 for Friday Night Lights.
