    California dreamin’ at linebacker

On Wednesday night we profiled one nationally recruited linebacker that has major interest in Ohio State (Georgia’s Michael Harris), and today we’ll go across the country to California to look at another one.

The Buckeyes have been very interested in Solomon Tuliaupupu, a 4-star prospect out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana (Calif.) for some time, and player 247Sports ranks as the country’s No. 3 inside linebacker is returning the favor.

“Yes sir, we’ve been staying in touch,” the 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior told Land of 10. “I’ve been talking to (head coach Urban) Meyer and (new linebackers coach Billy) Davis. He’s a great guy. They’re both great people.”

Tuliaupupu recently told Rivals.com ($$) that the Buckeyes are one of the programs he’s hearing from the most and he says he’s hoping to make a visit to Columbus sometime soon.

“I’m not entirely sure about a visit,” he told Land of 10. “I want to try and make a summer visit and an official visit (to Ohio State) is almost definite.”

A decision from Tuliaupupu isn’t expected until late in the process.

    SURPRISE VISITOR

It wasn't expected, but Ohio State welcomed Santa Ana, California, Mater Dei four-star linebacker Solomon Nokeakua-Stroud Tuliaupupu to campus on Thursday afternoon. It's his first trip to Ohio, and he'll be here through Sunday.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Tuliaupupu is considered the third-best inside linebacker and No. 59 prospect overall in the Class of 2018. He holds more than 30 offers from programs such as Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA, USC — the presumed favorite — and Washington.

With his family alongside him, this weekend is rather significant if the Buckeyes ultimately want to pull Tuiliaupupu away from the California sun.

“I don't want to rule anyone out because of distance,” Tuliaupupu told Eleven Warriors. "It would definitely be nice to have all my family at my games, but I ultimately just want to choose the college best for me."

    Tuliaupupu talks Buckeyes

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei 4-star LB Solomon Tuliaupupu has an offer list longer than his last name and recently took a series of trips to Alabama, Auburn and Ohio State.

He appeared to enjoy his time in Columbus. He told Nick Krueger of Rivals.com that he was particularly impressed with new linebackers coach Bill Davis.

“Coach Davis is a great coach,” he said. “He has a lot of experience in the league, and of course that’s one of my dreams. But they also have a good education to fall back on in case football doesn’t work.”

With more than 30 offers at this time, Tuliaupupu doesn’t have a favorite. It’s often a challenge to pull West Coast prospects away from the Pacific time zone, but unofficial visits are a sign that a player is at least entertaining the prospect of leaving home. It’s a great sign for the Buckeyes to be one of the recipients of those visits.

It could take another unofficial visit plus 1 of his 5 official visits for the Buckeyes to really be considered a legitimate option for the No. 3 inside linebacker in the Class of 2018, but they’re off to a good start.

    Solomon Tuliaupupu update
Beginning this week, Ohio State is going to have a much better understanding of what its 2018 linebacker class could end up looking like. Regardless of what happens Tuesday (when Dallas Gant announces his college choice) or later this month (more on that later), there’s another linebacker in this recruiting class who will remain a top Buckeyes target all the way to signing day.

That is Solomon Tuliaupupu, 247Sports’ third-ranked inside linebacker for 2018. The 247Sports.com Crystal Ball currently reads 100 percent to USC for the star from Santa Ana (Calif.) powerhouse Mater Dei. But Tuliaupupu’s father, Turnbull, says rumors and speculation are just part of this lengthy process.

“It comes with the territory,” the elder Tuliaupupu told Land of 10. “Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to one.”

What it not opinion is how the Buckeyes are faring in this recruitment. So far, so good for new linebackers coach Billy Davis & Co.

“Bill (Davis), he’s been spearheading the recruitment of Solo(mon) as well as coach Urban Meyer,” the elder Tuliaupupu shared. “(He’s) Genuine. I like Bill. We don’t have to get the ‘salesman’ pitch. Of course, it makes it a little easier that it’s Ohio State he’s doing it for. Theprocess started sometime back with coach (Luke) Fickell and Meyer.

“We really like Ohio State. We plan to visit a couple more times and that will help the decision process.”

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Tuliaupupu made his only visit to Columbus in mid-April, a three-day stay with the Buckeyes that culminated in watching the Ohio State spring game. Leaving California and the West Coast isn’t something that is new, or worrisome, for this family. However, the trip to Ohio — and a few other stops in April — may have helped cement that idea in the 4-star prospect’s mind, according to his father.

“We have,” Tuliaupupu said when asked if the family has thought about his son leaving home. “Florida State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma have been on him early. I told have always told him to not let distance be a factor in limiting your decision. (Solomon) couldn’t grasp the reasoning until he got out to Ohio, Alabama, Washington and Oregon.”

Another trip to Ohio State may be on the docket already.

“We’ll probably do Ohio State’s [Friday Night Lights] in July,” Turnbull added. “We’ll try and make a stop to Georgia, and maybe Oklahoma or Tennessee.”

    FOUR-STAR LINEBACKER SOLOMON TULIAUPUPU

It's been rumored that some within the program like Solomon Tuliaupupu more than Virginia Beach four-star inside linebacker Teradja Mitchell, who is set to make his decision between Florida State and Ohio State in the next few weeks. If Mitchell lands with the Seminoles, the staff will likely go all-out for Tuliaupupu — and continue to play the waiting game with Georgia three-star Michael Harris.

Most assume the California native will end up at USC, as a lot of highly rated Polynesian players do. But Tuliaupupu's father said after his son's first trip to Columbus for the Spring Game last month that's not a certainty. Distance, of course, puts the staff a significant disadvantage, but the Buckeyes will be right in the thick of things if Tuliaupupu returns to campus again this fall.
