    Stop — Rumor time

We are just two days away from the end of the recruiting dead period and the start of the final, dramatic push toward National Signing Day on Feb. 1. With that comes a new rush of seemingly random rumors and misdirection from coaches, recruits, their families and more. It’s a lot of fun. Really.

So, let’s try to dispel one of the week’s biggest rumors, which centers around Wyatt Davis, one of Ohio State’s biggest — and most important — 2017 commitments. In December, the speculation was that Davis was still heavily considering USC. He rebuked it.

“I have no idea,” Davis told Land of 10 about the USC rumors. “I’m not going there.”

On Tuesday, the rumor is that the country’s top-ranked offensive guard will take a visit to Washington this coming weekend. That also, is false, according to Davis.

“No, I am not visiting there,” Davis told Land of 10 on Tuesday. “To be honest, I don’t know where these rumors come from.”

Davis spent last week in San Antonio, where he started at guard for the West team in the U.S. Army All-American game. He hung out with a lot of different players going to a lot of different schools, but said the time with Ohio State commitments helped strengthen the bond between the future Buckeyes in attendance.

“It was a really good week,” he said of the experience in Texas. “I felt like we all truly got to know each other better.”

Since he committed to Ohio State in June, there has been no shortage of rumors around Davis’ commitment but he — and his family — have refuted every single one. Could he be giving lip service to all those who ask? Sure, he could, but sources close to the Buckeyes are expressing no concern that he’ll sign, or even visit, elsewhere.

It’s not easy to predict the actions of teenagers, but — at some point — a rapport is developed that you hope allows for truth in conversation. Davis has never been anything but forthcoming and direct, so we’ll choose to believe him when he says he’s solid with the Buckeyes.

Off the field, Davis is affable, friendly and pleasant. On it, the five-star offensive guard loves to mash defensive linemen into the ground and – let’s just say – he sometimes plays through the whistle. That toughness, plus his massive size, should help him get on the field early at Ohio State, and it should help him battle some of the best in the Big Ten. Davis played offensive tackle at powerhouse St. John Bosco, which speaks to his athleticism and light feet, but his strength and power do not go unnoticed. Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama and the local schools were all involved.

Wyatt Davis, Ohio State meet one last time

The final stretch to signing day is here and though most of the Buckeyes commitments are seemingly secure and ready to sign with Ohio State, the scuttlebutt around Wyatt Davis has a number of Buckeyes fans worried.

If you’re scoring at home, you may wonder if the Ohio State staff was worried, as well. Considering the decision to send O-line coach Greg Studrawa to California on Friday to see Davis and his family one last time before National Signing Day, maybe there was some concern.

However, it sure seems like there’s nothing to worry about at this point.

“The visit was great,” Davis told Land of 10 about the time with Studrawa. “It was great. We just hung out and ate food. Typical offensive line stuff.”

While there were hamburgers, there was not Meyer on this trip. Meyer made his final trip to California to see Davis prior to his state-title game in December. There was some discussion about the new Buckeyes offense, though. You may think that a new offensive mindset doesn’t impact the offensive line, but it could.

“I think the offense is going to be more complementary to offensive line schemes,” he said. “Coach Wilson used to be an offensive line coach.”

Davis is expected to sign his Letter of Intent Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. PST. He will appear on ESPN, live from the network’s Los Angeles studio, later in the afternoon. The time is to be determined.

Meyer said he had Greg Studrawa camp out at Wyatt Davis' house on Friday because USC's head coach "lives in the same neighborhood."

    OG Wyatt Davis

The improvement shown by Demetrius Knox and Matthew Burrell will probably prevent Wyatt Davis from becoming the second true freshman offensive line starter at Ohio State in as many years. The longer that battle drags on, though, the better shot he’ll have.

Davis is the No. 1 offensive guard in the class of 2017, and he plays with the nasty streak required of offensive linemen at this level. Because he played at Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, one of the top high school teams in the country, he’s incredibly polished.

“Wyatt Davis, I went out and watched him practice,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said. “Obviously he’s a great story, how we got him. Wonderful high school program, one of the best programs in America. I don’t want to say he’s ready-made because that’s not fair for him, but that’s how much respect we have for Bosco football program.”

It will be an uphill climb for Davis to win the job outright because he didn’t enroll early, but he’ll almost certainly be in the mix and feature prominently on the depth chart.
