Abel Porter wasn't recruited out of high school. Now he joins the #Buckeyes as a grad transfer. I spoke with the Utah State product on his journey, his familiarity with Columbus, a tie to the program, how he got here and much more: https://t.co/K5S0xUmMIl— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) April 11, 2020
Abel Porter took the road less traveled to Columbus with a two-year mission trip to Russia, walking on at Utah State and earning a scholarship before transferring to Ohio State. https://t.co/jpXzcayib3— Eleven Warriors (@11W) May 4, 2020

Duane Washington Jr. needs to become a more efficient offensive player, Seth Towns has to get healthy and the top item on every other Ohio State player's offseason to-do list. https://t.co/ojbvDwqE7H— Eleven Warriors (@11W) June 26, 2020 ABEL PORTER (REDSHIRT SENIOR – POINT GUARD) NEEDS TO ... PROVE HE CAN PLAY BACKUP POINT GUARD MINUTES Ever since the middle of his redshirt sophomore season, Porter has started every game he has played. Yet because of the former walk-on's graduate transfer from Utah State to Ohio State, he's expected to come off of the bench behind Walker and Washington as a Buckeye. Still, while serving in a different role, he should have ample opportunities to play meaningful minutes. He's one of only three Buckeyes who'll play lead guard this season. “They were open about what their current guard situation was,” Porter said in May. “They also only had two guards on their team at the time. So there was an opportunity for playing time, but they were kind of just walking me through where I could see playing time and how it would work and what they would picture me doing. It obviously fit perfectly with what I wanted.” Ohio State won't need Porter to become a star or a primary scorer. Rather, the coaches will simply want him to be a veteran facilitator who can aptly spell Walker and Washington when needed. This offseason, he'll get the first shot to show that he can fill such a role.
"He doesn't look like the most athletic player but he brings a lot to the team. He's going to help us a lot." #Buckeyes senior CJ Walker on grad transfer Abel Porter.— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) October 2, 2020

Abel is a tremendous person and I know he was really excited about being a Buckeye. He’s told me how grateful he is for the medical care he’s received here. Big thanks to Jared and so many others in the Buckeye family who have sent words of support to him. Special stuff! https://t.co/Uy5zY3v5ts— Chris Holtmann (@ChrisHoltmann) November 4, 2020
Today should mark Senior Day for Abel Porter. Instead, a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ended his Ohio State hoops career before it got started.A Q&A with Porter: https://t.co/bQfXtVkVBI— Colin Hass-Hill (@chasshill) March 6, 2021
