Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell Update

The class of 2012 is absolutely loaded with talent. Names like D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, Dejuan Marerro, Ron Patterson, Jeremy Hollowell have blown up on the recruiting scene over the past year or so and these guys have truly become national level recruits. One name that often gets forgotten or left out of conversations regarding the incoming sophomore class is Park Tudor point guard Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell, once hailed as the best fourth grader in the nation by a recruiting service. Yogi took the past two seasons off of AAU ball to work on his game, and also to find just the right fit in a summer team. Well, the hard work and patience has paid dividends in the form of big-time attention from D1 coaches and, as of today, two brand new scholarship offers. Both the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Butler Bulldogs have stepped forward and offered the lightning quick 5'9 point guard. There are definite connections and reasons for these two schools desiring the services of Yogi outside of his tremendous summer play. Ohio State has been in need of point guard help ever since the early defection of Mike Conley to the NBA, which was followed by the transfer of Anthony Crater. They do have Liberty-Benton standout Aaron Craft locked up for 2010, but point is still an area of concern for the Buckeyes. Butler should come as no surprise since Ferrell's high school coach is former Butler and New Castle star Darnell Archey, who would certainly love to see his star player end up at his alma mater. Congrats to Yogi, who has certainly earned what he has received with his strong play this summer and in the past high school season! More offers are sure to come....

College coaches finally catch highly touted 'Yogi'

A Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell, who gained acclaim as the nation's top-ranked fourth grade basketball player by a publication five years ago, is back on the scene.

Not that Ferrell actually went anywhere. But for the past two years, he has been absent from the summer basketball rat race. Instead, the Park Tudor sophomore-to-be worked with his father, Kevin Ferrell Sr., to hone his game, particularly his shot.

This week was the first chance Ferrell had to play in front of college coaches in the travel tournament circuit. The 5-10 point guard played up two levels, helping the 17-and-under Spiece Indy Heat to a semifinal appearance at the Hoosier Shootout.

"To come back is exciting -- even more exciting than it was (before)," he said. "Taking those years off with my dad and training really helped. We really worked on my shot, getting a lot of repetitions."

Ferrell's recruiting has started to heat up. He said he has taken an official visit to Butler and received a scholarship offer, and also is being recruited by Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue and Ohio State, among others.

Though Ferrell acknowledges there was "a little pressure" that came with his designation as the nation's top fourth grader, he's happy with how it has turned out.

"I was gone for two years so people were wondering where I was," he said. "Now I'm back. I really think it turned out great for me."

Ferrell snags Purdue offer

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell, a 5-11 sophomore guard at Park Tudor, picked up an offer from Purdue this week after attending an elite camp over the weekend.

Ferrell, who took two years off the summer basketball circuit before playing again this summer with the Spiece Indy Heat, visited Purdue again Thursday.

"From talking to the coaches, we got a good sense of how he'd fit into the program," said his father, Kevin Ferrell. "From talking to coach (Matt) Painter, we feel like this could really be a good opportunity."

Ferrell said they are planning an unofficial visit Sept. 19 for the Purdue-Northern Illinois football game. He is also planning visits to Michigan and Ohio State. Ferrell said his son has offers from Butler, Purdue and Ohio State.

"We don't want to rush into a decision," Kevin Ferrell said. "We'd like to make it his junior year, but if a 'good feel' comes along, we'll take it. There can be a lot of pressure because coaches tell you there's only one or two scholarships available, but you have to make sure it's the right fit."

Also showing well was 2012 point guard Kevin Ferrell. Ferrell is super quick with the ball, and he was able to penetrate into the defense and create plays for himself and his teammates. He showed his dynamic pull up jumper, and also he was a pest on defense harassing the Gameface guards with his ball pressure.

Kevin Ferrell (2012 Indiana Elite)- A sturdy and quick point guard, Ferrell was Indiana Elite's most impressive performer in its close win over M33M. He knocked down three-pointers when open and created scoring opportunities off the dribble. His 16 points along with Cody Zeller's 16 points led Indiana Elite.

Yogi trying 'not to let it get to my head'

Indianapolis top junior guard Yogi Ferrell has been getting a lot of attention from the media and college coaches in recent months.

The 5-foot-11 junior-to-be at Park Tudor School said he's trying not to let all of the attention affect his play on the court or his path to an improved game.

"I don't want it to get to my head," Ferrell said. "So, I just have to keep working. I like going out there and just playing and not worrying about anything else."

Ferrell said he has offers from Indiana, Purdue and Butler with interest also coming from Illinois, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Washington, Virginia and Notre Dame.

"My top five list as of now?," Ferrell said. "I really don't have one. I am going to wait to see if I get more offers (this summer) and then go from there. It's a huge simmer for me."

When asked about his interest level with the Hoosiers, Ferrell said "Coach (Tom) Crean is a great guy and I have been there a lot. It's somewhere my family can get to see me play."
