Ohio State fans have been clamoring for the services of Brandon McGee, a quick four-star prospect from Florida. But those Buckeyes -- as well as fans of other schools after McGee -- are likely going to have to wait for some time before learning of the cornerback prospect's final decision.

With spring football in season and a full slate of official visits on tap for the fall, do not expect Brandon McGee to be committing anywhere anytime soon.

Instead, the four-star prospect from Plantation, Fla., is settling back and setting in for the long haul considering his recruitment.

“Right now I’m still staying pretty open,” he told BuckeyeSports.com. “I’m thinking about making my decision sometime in early January.”

At 6-0, 180 pounds, McGee suits up at quarterback for his school. A dual-threat player, he threw for 934 yards and nine touchdowns against seven interceptions and rushed for 262 more yards. But when it comes to college, he projects as a cornerback.

Scout.com lists him as the No. 6 cornerback prospect in the country. McGee said he will not consider a school that is not recruiting him to play the position.

“Position will definitely be an important factor,” he said. “Some schools offered me as receiver, some schools offered me as a quarterback but if I’m not being offered as a corner then I won’t even look at that school.”

Plantation head coach Alphonso Davis said he sees McGee having the most success in college at the cornerback position.

“I think Brandon can be a good cornerback at the next level,” he said. “He’s athletic enough and he runs in the 4.3, 4.4 range and has good size for a corner – 6-0, about 185.”

That is likely good news for Ohio State, which is recruiting McGee as a cornerback first with the potential to play other spots as well.

“They are looking at me as a corner and they’ve talked to me about playing both sides like Chris Gamble did,” he said. “It would be an adjustment, but it will be a smooth transition. The footwork will be a lot of the same. It would just come down to learning the cornerback position a little more.”

Asked what position is his favorite to play, McGee was hard-pressed for an answer.

“That’s a good question,” he said. “It’s between quarterback and corner. The reason I like quarterback so much is that you’re basically the field general so you just take control of the field. At corner it’s just coming up, making hits and locking down receivers.”

McGee was one of several Florida athletes to make the trip north to see OSU’s spring game April 19. After he booked his ticket on SkyBus, the airline went bankrupt and ceased flights. As a result, McGee wound up re-booking his flight and paying an extra $130 to get to Columbus.

Although he saw a few other campuses, it was the only spring game he took in.

“When I’m taking a visit, I’m just really trying to get the vibe of the school and everything and see what the campus is like,” he said. “I want to get a feel for the coaches and just build a relationship with the coaches and see what the players are like, too.”

The Buckeyes apparently scored well in those categories.

“Ohio State is one of the standout schools,” he said. “I had a pretty good visit there. It was fun. The coaches were real nice and everything and the players seemed real cool. We got a chance to see the city, and Columbus is real cool. It was pretty good.

Since then, McGee has kept in close contact with OSU safeties coach Paul Haynes. The two talk “probably three times a week,” McGee said. Haynes was on hand for the team’s first spring practice this season and was also scheduled to be there for practice Tuesday.

McGee declined to name other schools near the top of his list besides the Buckeyes. That is what the next few months will be for, he said.

“Every school has something unique about them,” McGee said. “Every school has told me something that stands out to me. I’ll take my five official visits, but I think what will really matter is the unofficial visits.”

Hmm, early January he says? Well hopefully we will still have room by then the way these commits keep rolling in.

He'll visit for the Michigan game and he'll see all the fan support and the tradition and he'll hang out with the past players and be blown away by the whole experience. If we can get an official visit, I think we'll be in the top 2-3 for this kid.

I don't feel real good about getting McGee. We already have a lot of DBs in this class and that might force him to go elsewhere.

Don't forget he is also an outstanding WR. Remember Ginn and Gonzo were recruited as DB's.

I have no idea where he is going? He has taken several unofficial visit's to Miami lately though a few "in the know" say there is no way he's going to Miami.

brandon mcgee is another superstar that we basically closed the door on in favor of the esteemed bradley mcdougald and corey brown. we are now going to lose him as well to either tennessee or ol' miss...OL' FRICKIN MISS! that is who we are losing top talent to, middle to bottom tier sec teams. uggh.
