Why wait ? That makes zero sense. This is work performed, and it makes zero sense for payment to be withheld for years before being remitted.

Are we just trying to make sure college students stay poor while schools and the NCAA stuff as much cash into their pockets as possible ?

I'm all for paying athletes, I'm just not looking forward to people bitching when women's fencing isnt getting the same as the star QB at a football school.

This pay will have to be on sliding scale to work. It's about what you bring in, not your perceived worth.

This isn’t pay from the university. This is opening athletes to the free market to seek endorsements from companies willing to pay for their image in reference to advertisement and giving athletes a piece of the pie from the advertisement money the universities receive from sponsors in respect to the sports that they pay for.

There are solid arguments against schools paying athletes directly for their services and how that would work, but this is not that conversation.

    Both great points.

Are all of our sports teams endorsed by the same company? (Nike?) Would it make sense for athletes to get some % of that endorsement money? As well as being on the free market for personal endorsements? (So that the "money maker" athletes can get their fair due.)

IMO, the money would likely be dispersed evenly on a baseline pay to all athletes (very minimal stipend), and the athletes of higher earning sports would compensated for their image based on profitability models conducted by ad agencies.

Athletes could also seek endorsement deals individually on the free market, and jersey sales would have to be shared with the teams/athletes who are featured.

There is literally a model for it in pro sports, and zero reason to think it can’t be done at the collegiate level. The only difference is that the player salaries are paid in scholarship rather than private sporting teams.

I also think that athletes should be required to declare all usage of their likeness in order to ensure that boosters and partner companies are acting in compliance with all new guidelines.

Athletes who do not abide by these guidelines would be declared ineligible.

The problem isn’t that it’s difficult/complicated, the problem is greed.

I was referring to the NCAA... I agree wholeheartedly that their response is laughable.

This should move pretty quickly once it goes through. It's about damn time, and I think it's the right decision. The schools shouldn't be forced to pay the players outside of scholarship and sponsorship shares, which preserves title ix.

This allow the free market to work as it should IMO, and doesn't have an effect on amateurism.

If this goes forward and/or increases in filings; place the money in a trust fund. Cannot be touched until the athlete has graduated, exhausted eligibility or is an agreed age (I.E. - 27 yrs.).
Paying while in school is a slippery slope that college sports should not go down.

Nah. That's just silly. Let the players earn a living while in school.

If they can't handle the money, that's on them.
