    THE SERIES WAS BETTER
It’s been well-documented that Ohio State could potentially lose all six starting wide receivers following the 2018 season — seven, if you include walk-on-turned-scholarship-player C.J. Saunders — and the position is one of great need this cycle as a result.

While the staff would certainly love to land four or five blue-chip prospects to replace them, the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. Just look back at the last two years, as the Buckeyes ultimately added three-star wideouts Ellijah Gardiner and Chris Olave to a batch of several higher-rated prospects late in their respective cycles.

A player who could ultimately fill that role this year is Odessa, Texas, Permian three-star Peyton Powell, whom the staff offered on Tuesday morning.

The 6-foot-2, 182-pound Powell is considered the 42nd-best wide receiver and No. 496 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, though he accumulated more than 2,600 all-purpose yards and 39 touchdowns in his two-year career as the starting quarterback at Midland Christian. He transferred schools in January, and will now have a chance to win the Panthers’ starting gig with graduating senior Steve Steen off to the Naval Academy this fall.

Permian, you may recall, was the focus of the 1990 book (and later 2004 movie) “Friday Night Lights.”

Powell — who now holds a dozen offers from programs such as Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Utah and Virginia — recently ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at Nike Football’s The Opening Dallas Regional. He also had a 37.6-inch vertical leap and a 4.25-second agility shuttle, which is why programs are seemingly torn on what position he’ll play at the next level.

    YES, HE KNOWS BOOBIE MILES
Odessa, Texas, Permian three-star athlete Peyton Powell included Ohio State in his Top 10 on Monday night alongside Arkansas, Baylor, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas, TCU, Texas Tech and Virginia.

“It’s one of the best schools and the coaching staff is one of the best,” Powell told Eleven Warriors.

The 6-foot-2, 182-pound Powell is considered the 38th-best athlete and No. 444 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, though he accumulated more than 2,600 all-purpose yards and 39 touchdowns in his two-year career as the starting quarterback at Midland Christian. He transferred to Permian — which you may recall was the focus of the 1990 book and 2004 movie “Friday Night Lights” — back in January.

Powell has never been to campus, but is finalizing plans to attend Friday Night Lights, naturally. The Buckeyes are recruiting him as a defensive back, but the staff has also had discussions about utilizing him on the offensive side of the ball.

“All of them, really,” Powell said when asked which coaches he speaks with.

Powell wants to play quarterback at the next level and admits distance will play a factor in his recruitment, so that doesn’t bode well for Ohio State’s chances in the long run. He also plans to make a decision before the start of his senior season.

Is Ohio State closing in on commitment from Peyton Powell?
There were a number of highly-recruited 2019 prospects that made official visits to Ohio State last weekend, and so far that group has yielded one commitment. But another could be on the verge of coming soon.

Peyton Powell, a 3-star athlete from Odessa (Texas) Permian High School, is a quarterback in high school but is being recruited by the Buckeyes as a cornerback. And he loved everything about his recent visit to Columbus.

“I really liked it up there,” Powell, 6-foot-2 and 185-pounds, told Lettermen Row. “Just the atmosphere in the whole city, and how well the coaching staff and players meshed. I liked all the coaches. They were all cool, and they were straight up.”

Powell has offers from Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and about 15 others. But each program sees him as a different type of fit — some at offense, some on defense.

The Buckeyes are recruiting him as a cornerback, and if that ends up being his college choice, he’s confident they’ll turn him into the best cornerback he can be. His 4.4 speed and almost 38-inch vertical leap are excellent starting points.

“I trust their ability to develop me at whatever position they see me fit best,” he said. “Just because of their past player development, they’re the best at it.”

There’s no timeline for a decision, but Powell has an outline for making one.

“Ohio State is definitely top 3,” he said. “I’ll try to take one more official before I make my commitment. TCU or Oklahoma State, maybe.”

Ohio State target Peyton Powell sets decision date
One of Ohio State’s top remaining 2019 targets has set a date for his commitment.

That is Odessa (Texas) Permian athlete Peyton Powell, and the Buckeyes are recruiting the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Powell as a defensive back. He made an official visit to Columbus in June, and since that time, Ohio State has been the 247Sports.com crystal ball favorite. The Buckeyes currently own all 11 predictions. Powell’s decision has been delayed because he wants to take a few more visits prior to announcing a choice.

“I’m going to TCU and Baylor soon,” Powell told Lettermen Row on Thursday morning. “And I’m still trying to get to Texas and Arkansas.”

What makes Powell’s recruitment interesting is that he’s been recruited as heavily at wide receiver as he is at defensive back, so ultimately his choice will come down to the school that he feels allows him to be developed best, regardless of what position he plays in high school.

My personal crystal ball is on Ohio State, and I think Powell could be one of a handful of players to verbal to the Buckeyes in August.

Oklahoma could foil Ohio State plans for Peyton Powell

We’re just about two weeks away from the date that Ohio State is set to find out if its months-long pursuit of Odessa (Texas) Permian athlete Peyton Powell will bear fruit.

    Maybe.

I say maybe because the 4-star athlete picked up a big, potentially-game changing offer on Monday from a school that he has some family connections to and is on Ohio State’s football level. I think that offer could possibly change Powell’s plans completely.

Powell’s cousin is former Sooners wide receiver Sterling Shepard of the New York Giants, and if you take a good, hard look at a map of the continental United States, you’ll see that Norman, Okla., is much closer to Odessa than is Columbus, Ohio.

No, distance doesn’t really matter. And to this point, the Buckeyes have a much stronger relationship with Powell. But there will almost assuredly be a visit with the Sooners set up for this coming week or next. When that happens, things are going to get dicey.

Oklahoma, like Ohio State, has offered Powell a scholarship as a defensive back, whereas the majority of his current offers are as an offensive player. His best football future is probably on the defensive side of the ball.

My current 247Sports.com crystal ball prediction for Powell is on Ohio State, but that’s extremely tenuous at this point.

    TRENDING AWAY
Had Odessa, Texas, Permian four-star athlete Peyton Powell stuck with his original timeline, he would have most likely committed to Ohio State this afternoon.

He instead delayed his college decision amid a recent offer from Oklahoma and the uncertainty surrounding Meyer’s future, citing a desire to focus on his senior season for the timing being. After about a week of reflection, though, it appears Powell has set a new decision date, Sept. 26.

The 6-foot-2 and 182-pound Powell — who took an official visit with the Buckeyes clear back in late June — will be at the Sooners’ season opener against Florida Atlantic. He’s never been to Norman, but proximity and family ties (his cousin is former wide receiver Sterling Shepard) seemingly give the program quite an advantage in his recruitment.

Powell’s new date certainly gives the situation at Ohio State a chance to play out and the program a chance to get him back on campus, albeit in an unofficial capacity. That means he’d have to make the trip to Columbus on his own dime, an unlikely proposition given the logistical difficulties of playing a game on Friday night and traveling to campus for a noon or 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Buckeyes can still invite Powell to attend the AdvoCare Showdown at AT&T Stadium against TCU — since each school is provided with a small number of tickets for neutral-site games — but coaches are not allowed to have contact with recruits in an off-campus setting. So let’s be honest, that’s not going to help.

All that said, I flipped my 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction to Oklahoma this afternoon. Ohio State will now focus all of its efforts on Florida four-star Kaiir Elam, whose family has a strong bond with Meyer dating back to his days as an assistant at Notre Dame and the head coach at Florida.

Ohio State attempts another Texas takeover

198 miles or so south of Arlington, Texas, the Texas Longhorns were hosting the USC Trojans in a prime-time, major matchup for two of college football’s all-time great programs. While the ‘Horns were thumping the Trojans and picking the school’s 900th win, dozens of the country’s best recruits, and the best recruits from Texas, watched closely from the stands at D.K. Royal Stadium in Austin.

So, all things considered for Ohio State, the fact that many players, including Odessa Permian 4-star cornerback prospect Peyton Powell, chose to travel to AT&T Stadium to check out the Buckeyes versus the Horned Frogs is a pretty great thing.

All in all, the Buckeyes purchased 100 tickets for recruits to attend the game as their guests, and at least a handful or two showed up, but none were more important than Powell, who is now just nine days away from a college decision. Whether or not this opportunity to see Ohio State turns the tide in his recruitment — things have been trending toward Oklahoma since they offered in August — is up in the air, especially considering the Buckeyes couldn’t communicate with him, but clearly Powell is still thinking about Ohio State a bit.

Other big time prospects like RJ Mickens, the country’s top-ranked 2020 safety, 4-star running back E.J. Smith and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a talented 4-star wide receiver from nearby Rockwall were in attendance as well.

The Buckeyes always travel well, which isn’t a surprise, but it’s rare for any program to have the draw that Ohio State does for recruits, even when they’re on the road.
