PM Repost | 2015 OSU Spring Positional Recap: Quarterback http://t.co/j4upgQLqSN— Tony Gerdeman (@TonyGerdeman) May 5, 2015
So I was just thinking about something. I think it could be pretty cool to see weekly battle for the starter. Win the job every week. Or, since all three offer something different, play the guy who is the biggest threat to the team we play. If a team gives up the deep ball a lot, play Cardale. If a team struggles with containing a mobile QB, play Braxton. If we need the best decision maker, play JT. It would also force teams to prepare for three different styles of QB play, which I'm sure would be extremely frustrating.
Cool idea. You also reduce the number of hits your spread QB takes in a season. There's something to be said about continuity with the rest of the starters though. But, when your other positions rotate a lot too, that's probably less of an issue.
Per Fox sports,odds on starting QB for VT ~~~~ Barrett 43 % Jones 32 % Miller 25 % don't kill the mailman.

Quarterback Battles Are Fun, But at Ohio State They Don't Really Seem to Matter http://t.co/6yWHzuivKB pic.twitter.com/Y50vXX0Tvt— Tony Gerdeman (@TonyGerdeman) June 14, 2015
I think you see some sort of situational rotation. Like a per game rotation, not like every other drive. Maybe whoever matches up with against certain defenses gets the nod.
Could it be as simple as reading the opposing team's coverage tendencies week-to-week? Braxton or Cardale against the man teams, JT against zone? I don't think there will be a season-long commitment in week 1. The luxury of having Cardale is that you can put a "pitch count" on Braxton and a carry limit on JT if their recoveries take more time to get 100. Not just in games, but practice as well. I'm still on Team Braxton, but it's hard not to love all three of these guys. Think about our quarterback depth from the last three games we played and the next one we play January: total starting experience, 3 games Cardale Marshall Collier (RS) September: total starting experience, 51 games Miller Barrett Cardale Collier Gibson (RS?) Burrow (RS)
Only problem with rotating QBs is the team builds no consistency. It will be hard for WR to get in flow because they can't get use to each QBs tendencies on when he'll release ball or when he'll tuck and run. Same thing with RBs every week a different guy giving hand offs. I think you guys are over looking this little things that are MASSIVE difference and could trouble the team The rotating qb would cause more problems. You have to have 1 guy you go with. Just how it has to be
I understand that argument if you rotate within the game but not preparing a QB for a full week. Cardale didn't seem to have any issues when he had to prep for Wisconsin.
With how often we may rotate skill players, it could be more sensible to have two quarterbacks. It may help the quarterbacks to only work with one or two different running backs, the same receivers every time out, etc. Especially early in the season, you can give one group a different part of the play book than the other. Conventional wisdom is "one guy," and there's a reason why it's conventional wisdom. We haven't seen many examples of rotating QBs being successful. But, we're not trying to get cute or not hurt QBs feelings. It's just, when will any team ever be this deep at QB? I think it warrants exploration and creativity.
That's not fair to the other skill guys to say you have to work with this qb. Feelings will get hurt, no beating around it. I've always thought JT should get job, but I'm also a firm believer that an injury should not be what makes you lose your spot, so that means Miller But with Jones on all these photo shoots and mag covers and such I wouldn't be surprised that he gets job.
That's no different then picking a starter. I bet Michael Thomas would prefer to have Braxton out there, even if JT wins the job. Maybe a bad example, MT will be out there for every snap. There are legit reasons to pick one QB, but I wouldn't worry about that one. I don't think Urban wants any part of a quarterback rotation. Yeah, he did it in Florida once, but that was because he had limited QBs. Right now he has three complete guys. They all three have different specialties, but each of them has shown that they're good enough to handle every aspect the offense requires. Like any "never-coached-a-day-in-my-life" football fan, I want to see them get creative, but it's probably not realistic. You get creative when you're limited, not when you're already the best team in the world. However, for practicality sakes, I like the idea of splitting the hits on our quarterbacks. Braxton is injury-prone, but that's not the only reason he's had injury. Injury struggles are the norm for spread-option quarterbacks. It's just the way it is. Braxton, JT, Tebow, Pat White, Mariotta, Dixon, whoever.
