Default Looking Back On The Career Of Beanie Wells #28

As expected, Ohio State star running back, Chris "Beanie, Stiffarm, Tree Branch, Man Amongst Boys, #%*^&#$" Wells, officially declared to enter the 2009 NFL Draft. A decision that was highly talked about -- will he stay? Will he go? But a decision we already knew. The identity of our running game, and furthermore, our offense is moving on to greener pastures. I say good for him. He deserves all the accolades and applause for his leadership and intensity that carries on the tradition of Ohio State Football.

It only seems like yesterday when we were watching Beanie tear up SCUM in the Game of all Games. How can anyone forget the spin move he put on the defender and went 52 yards for a touchdown.

Beanie's freshman campaign was stellar as he accumulated 576 yards (5.5 AVG) on 104 carries with 7 TDs. All happening as he shared time with junior RB Antonio Pittman (1,233 YDS and 14 TDs).

Even though 2006 didn't end the way it was supposed to, it did give Buckeye fans some hope, as a budding star was growing up right in front us. 2007 was Beanie's year and there was no other back better than him, I am convinced.

On 274 carries, Beanie lead a team out for redemption with 1,609 yards (5.9 AVG) and 15 TDs. And, once again Beanie shows his strength and determination as he single handily takes care of arch-rival Michigan. Beanie rushed for a career best 222 yards and 2 TDs -- long being 62 yards. No one could stop Chris on this cold, rainy November afternoon.

The Buckeyes again advanced to the BCS Championship for the second consecutive year, and unfortunately, things didn't go our way again but Beanie was determined to keep us in the game. With 146 rushing yards and a 65 yard TD run, Chris again demonstrated his athletic abilities to a national audience as he outraced LSU defenders to put the Buckeyes on top.

The Buckeyes faced a long off season as they, again, get bounced in the BCS Title game. Among discussions were, "What happens to our coordinators, Is our team quick enough, We don't deserve to be in the championship games." All fair questions as they all have compelling answers to them.

But, as Buckeye fans, we were all super excited about the possibilities of getting to a 3rd consecutive BCS Championship game -- and this time maybe winning it with a seniors to be that decided to come back. James, Laurinaitis, Malcolm Jenkins, Alex Boone, and returning starting QB Todd Boeckman. Include in that, a super recruiting class that includes #1 recruit Terrelle Pryor, offensive linemen Michael Brewster, J.B. Shugarts, and Mike Adams.

All things considered, expectations were extremely high because the Buckeyes returned a ton of senior experience. A senior class that has won more games than any other senior class in the history of Ohio State football.

However, with great expectations comes the possibility of a great fall and right off the bat things went south for this team. Already facing a huge challenge in a much anticipated cross country match up with the USC Trojans, the Buckeyes lose starting RB Beanie Wells to a right foot injury in the first game of the season. This injury turned out to be the KO to our chances as the Buckeyes lost their identity on offense and couldn't match the challenge USC threw at this team.

The pressure is off. Another loss on the national stage erases any chance the Buckeyes make it to Miami. A lot is lost but all is not forgotten. As the leader he his, Beanie was determined not to let this season go down the drink as he gathered the troops and puts together another impressive campaign. With 207 carries Beanie rushed for 1,197 yards (5.8 AVG) and 8 TDs and solidifies his status as one of the great RBs that have come through this program.

In the end, not only did Beanie write his own legacy, but he also helped this team and program, the senior class went undefeated vs. Michigan AND in the first time in the history of the program the Buckeyes beat Michigan 5 straight times.

A lot can be said about the dynamic career of Chris "Beanie" Wells, but as a fan, one thing I will always remember and be thankful for is the undying and ultimate determination to help make this a better team. Each and every Saturday Chris gave all Buckeye fans something they want "... Our honor defend we will fight to the end for O-HI-O!"
