A Closer Look at Everett Withers
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State hired a head coach who knows a whole lot about success, but Urban Meyer is making sure to surround himself with assistants know just as much about adversity.
If it wasn’t enough to retain Luke Fickell, the Buckeyes’ interim coach for the 2011 season, Meyer has also added former North Carolina defensive coordinator Everett Withers to his new coaching staff in Columbus.

Everett Withers
Ohio State officially announced Meyer’s decision Wednesday to add Withers as the team’s associate head coach, along with co-defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes next season.
Some see the move as a second choice for Meyer after Ohio State seemingly could not work out a deal with former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops. In reality, Withers is a guy Meyer has been targeting for some time now.
“Urban Meyer made a run at Withers a couple of years ago to replace Charlie Strong as Florida's defensive coordinator a couple of years ago, so clearly he likes what Withers has to offer,” said Adam Powell, who covers North Carolina football for the 247 Sports site Carolina Blue.
“This hire makes sense on a lot of levels, and I think for the most part UNC fans are happy for Coach Withers that he's landed a good option at a place like Ohio State.”
The 48-year old Charlotte native was one of four candidates to become the full-time head coach in Chapel Hill, but athletic director Bubba Cunningham opted to go with Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora instead.

In 2009, the Tar Heels' defense was among the nation's elite, ranking sixth in total defense, 10th against the run, 13th in scoring defense and 14th in pass defense. Carolina was the only school in the country ranked in the top 15 in total yards allowed, scoring defense, run defense, pass defense, pass efficiency defense, third-down defense and tackles for losses.

2009 is what we need to pay attention to. That was only Carolina defense that Withers had that compares to the athletes he will be coaching at Ohio State...
He still had an above average defense in 2010 and that was after losing a ton of talent!

The only blemish on his record is 2007 Minny DC. And let's face it, the admin at Minny probably screwed that up with firing Mason. Those kids were probably depressed and it took awhile to gel!

College football: Withers ready to move on
By Andrew Carter

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Everett Withers grew up in Charlotte wanting to play football at North Carolina, never imagining that one day he would be the Tar Heels’ coach. So when the opportunity came, when North Carolina named Withers its interim coach after firing Butch Davis before this season, it was, in some ways, like a dream.
But that dream ends today. Withers will coach the Tar Heels for the final time when they play Missouri in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. He will then return to the assistant ranks, serving as assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator under Urban Meyer at Ohio State.
Withers gave the impression last week that he will leave with plenty of stories, good and bad — as well as some he’s not necessarily ready to share yet. He smiled when asked to reflect on his brief tenure as North Carolina coach.
“I have no doubt it’ll be positive” when I look back on it, he said. “I’ll be looking to get that book deal one day and write a book.”
He said it jokingly, but if Withers indeed wanted to sit down one day and put the past 41/2 months of his life on paper — or even the past 18 months — there wouldn’t be a shortage of compelling stories.
Withers became Tar Heels coach on July 28, one day after the university fired Davis amid an NCAA investigation into impermissible benefits and academic fraud that forced 14 players to serve suspensions of varying length during the 2010 season.
Withers had just days to prepare the Tar Heels for the start of preseason practice and to juggle his coaching staff.
North Carolina, meanwhile, characterized Withers’ promotion as what the program needed to move forward. And so, amid his rushed preparations for the start of the season, he became a public-relations symbol, representative of a new beginning.
All the while, Withers embraced his new role without ever knowing what his job status might be beyond this season. He wouldn’t say last week whether it had been strange, building a bridge from one era of Tar Heels football to another without knowing what awaited him on the other side.

Withers’ time on top
A look back at Everett Withers’ tenure as North Carolina’s interim coach:
*
July 27: Butch Davis is fired amid an NCAA investigation into impermissible benefits and academic fraud.
July 28: Withers, formerly the Tar Heels’ defensive coordinator, is introduced as the team’s interim coach.
Aug. 5: The Tar Heels begin preseason practice.
Sept. 3: In his first game as coach, Withers guides the Tar Heels to a 42-10 victory over James Madison. Withers awards a game ball to Davis.
Sept. 24: Withers suffers his first defeat, a 35-28 loss at Georgia Tech, which leaves North Carolina 3-1.
Oct. 8: The Tar Heels improve to 5-1 with a 14-7 victory over Louisville.
Nov. 2: Withers draws the ire of North Carolina State coach Tom O’Brien and Wolfpack fans when, in a recorded radio interview, he takes jabs at N.C. State’s academics and says recruits in the state need to know that North Carolina is the flagship university in the state.
Nov. 5: North Carolina suffers a 13-0 loss at N.C. State — the Tar Heels’ third defeat in four games.
Nov. 26: After losing at Virginia Tech, North Carolina closes the regular season with a 37-21 victory over Duke that gives the Tar Heels a 7-5 record.
Dec. 9: Larry Fedora is introduced as the new coach. Withers will coach the Tar Heels through the Independence Bowl.
Today: Withers will coach the Tar Heels against Missouri in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.

We have a lot of potential right now but I can't wait to see how they put it all together and what it actually becomes on the field
