Air base abuzz for Tressel visit

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
FAIRBORN, Ohio -- In his regular world, Neeraj Pujara works in the research laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. But yesterday, he donned the scarlet sweater that also identifies him as a longtime Ohio State football fan and welcomed into his domain coach Jim Tressel.
"It really is a pleasure and honor, because as far as I'm concerned, coach Tressel sets all the perfect ideals," Pujara said. "He's got those Woody Hayes values. He's not just a football coach. It's the person he is that I really appreciate about him and cheer."
An estimated 2,000 Air Force personnel, civilian employees and friends or family members boisterously welcomed Tressel, his wife, Ellen, and former Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman to what amounted to a pep rally in a massive hangar. Tressel considered it the first stop on a May trip he will take with four other coaches, including Mack Brown of Texas, to visit military personnel in the Middle East.
As for the cheers, "it should be the other way around," Tressel said. "I should bring about a thousand of our players over and cheer for (the military people). Because while we may get the visibility, they are the ones doing the jobs, the ones we need to keep reminding our young people about that, although they don't make SportsCenter, they are the heroes."

Don't laugh: Tressel belongs in the Hall of Fame now
Posted: April 27, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The sun was shining, the fans were tailgating, and there wasn't a significant injury in sight. Saturday was a good day for Ohio State football, at least until the spring game ended. That's when Jim Tressel tried to be a funny man at his postgame press conference. He bombed.
Asked why quarterback Terrelle Pryor skipped the fourth quarter, a move that veered from the scrimmage's script, Tressel said he ejected the mild-mannered sophomore. "Tossed him," the coach said. "Tired of his stuff." A few giggles followed.
Any more question, folks? Tressel's got more jokes. He jabbed at Marcus Williams getting hauled down after a 75-yard run. "We told Marcus he would have scored before he was married," he said. He picked on receiver Taurian Washington's accessories. "Those little wristbands that he had on top of his calves. We've got to straighten that out," he said.
Sorry, Coach. Crickets every time.
When Tressel is done at Ohio State, done with Saturday afternoon debriefings from behind a microphone, no one will remember the comedy. They will recall his head coaching, all 23-plus years of it to date. And they'll see that he compares favorably to almost anyone who has worn a whistle in major college football.
College sports has a funky tradition of inducting active coaches into its football and basketball halls of fame. The College Basketball Hall of Fame includes Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams. In college football, Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno still roam the sidelines despite their enshrinement in South Bend, Ind. And soon -- very soon -- Tressel should join them.
The rules say it can't happen. Until a few years ago, only retired coaches could get in. The policy now allows active coaches older than 75 into the Hall -- it was changed so Bowden and Paterno could be enshrined. The number seems a little arbitrary. So why not punt the "must-be-retired" part altogether?

Tressel to visit troops this week
Sunday, May 24, 2009 6:22 AM
With his trip to visit U.S. military installations in the Middle East coming up, Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel had to make sure he had a passport.
"I've never been overseas in my life, even though my kids have," said Tressel, 56. "I had to get a passport one other time, maybe seven or eight years ago, for a Nike thing in Mexico. I've got one stamp on it."
That will change beginning Wednesday, when Tressel departs, along with fellow coaches Mack Brown of Texas, Houston Nutt of Mississippi and Troy Calhoun of Air Force, and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville.
The Department of Defense-sponsored tour will include visits to Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan and possibly Iraq. They will return on June 4.
"I can't wait to get there; it's going to be a lot of fun," Tressel said. "I want to make sure those young men and women know we appreciate what they're doing and that everyone back home is thinking about them.
"And it sheds a little different light on this (Memorial Day) weekend."
