Very sad to hear. It's too bad things had to end for him like it did. I genuinely think he's a great person.

OSU Coach Urban Meyer on Joe Paterno:

Quote:
“I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Coach Joe Paterno. He was a man who I have deep respect for as a human being, as a husband and father, as a leader and as a football coach. I was very fortunate to have been able to develop a personal relationship with him, especially over the course of the last several years, and it is something that I will always cherish. My prayers and thoughts go out to his wife, Sue, and to their family, and also to the family he had at Penn State University. We have lost a remarkable person and someone who affected the lives of so many people in so many positive ways. His presence will be dearly missed. His legacy as a coach, as a winner and as a champion will carry on forever.”

Totally disagree and not afraid to take the unpopular position.

I suppose one could (incorrectly) accuse me of dancing on this man's grave, but I shed no tears for this guy. What has he really accomplished? Why does he deserve such reverence?

Wins? - I am not impressed with a guy who sticks around the longest and runs a mediocre program for the last 15 years of his life while Penn State gets lapped by its former peers (i.e. Ohio State, Texas, Florida, USC, etc.). he should be derided for his selfishness and refusal to let someone more capable take over.

Work in the Community? - Again, not impressed. Sure he raised money, but they guy was the most visible employee at Penn State for 5 decades. I ask, you, if you stick around somewhere for 50 years, he should have done so much more while he was there.

There is this rush to canonize him but I think just the opposite. I'm not convinced he will be headed upstairs if you know what I mean.

Whether you love, hate, respect, or don't respect JoePa he did make an impact on college football. You can't say he didn't. Should he have taken the Sandusky thing further up the chain and made sure something was being done about the abuse, yes, but don't crucify the guy. The guy, before this whole scandal, was viewed by everyone (peers, family, friends, and alumni) with the utmost respect. I think Penn State did him wrong and he died from a broken heart/soul. Coaching was all the man knew! Take that from him and he had nothing to live for anymore. Yes he had family but when you do something so long you get institutionalized and that is all you are in life. Retired military people know what I am talking about. The man should be honored, not blasted.
