2011-2012 Men's Basketball Schedule

Game vs. Lamar will be Dec. 20
A game against Lamar University at which Ohio State graduate Bob Knight presumably will be honored has been scheduled for Dec. 20, not Dec. 22, as the Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise reported yesterday.
I received the corrected date today from Dave Egelhoff, the OSU director of basketball operations, who said he expects to receive a signed contract from Lamar within a week.
Lamar recently hired Knight's son, Pat, as head coach, and Egelhoff said in an email today that the game would be a "great time" to honor Bob Knight, something Egelhoff said Ohio State coach Thad Matta has been a "big proponent of." The idea has only been discussed with the Lamar staff so far, though, Egelhoff said, and no plans made.
Bob Knight, who was a member of the Buckeyes' 1960 NCAA championship team, will be inducted Nov. 20 by the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Mo. His 902 wins are the most by a coach in NCAA Division I men's basketball, although it's likely the record will have been surpassed by then by Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, who finished last season with 900 career victories.

Kansas, Wright State, Knight, etc.
In case you missed it in the newspaper this morning, Kansas announced its 2011-12 nonconference schedule yesterday and revealed that its home game against Ohio State will be Dec. 10, a Saturday, in Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. A tipoff time will be announced later.
Kansas will return the game to Ohio State during the 2012-13 season.
Also, I confirmed with Ohio State last week that the Buckeyes' opener will be against Wright State as part of a season-opening, five-team "exempt" tournament that also will include home games against Florida, Jackson State and North Florida.
No dates were revealed. Opening night for many college basketball teams next season is Nov. 11.
Dave Egelhoff, the program's director of basketball operations, also confirmed that a home game against Lamar is being discussed with the Texas program that recently hired Pat Knight as head coach.
Egelhoff said in an email that Knight's father, Bob, "would be a major part of the game if we can work things out."
Bob Knight, an Ohio State graduate and the career wins leader among college basketball, will be inducted Nov. 20 by the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Mo.
"Obviously, with coach Knight being inducted, along with his contributions to the game of basketball, our program feels he should be properly honored by us and the university as being an alum who has done remarkable things since graduating from Ohio State," Egelhoff said.

I like how Florida, Duke, Kansas, & S. Carolina are spaced on the schedule. Normally I wouldn't like playing Florida so early [2nd game], but it should work out good this season because we will have the more experienced team.
I would love to make Florida a permanent fixture on the schedule. It's clearly a good rivalry that would only grow by continuing to play. This season will the 5th time that we played those Gator Boys in the last 6 seasons with that mini-series being tied 2-2. Bring on the rubber match!

Bob Baptist, The Columbus Dispatch......
-- The Big Ten announced today which teams each team will play only once during the conference season next year. Ohio State's "one-plays" will be Penn State and Purdue at home and Iowa and Minnesota on the road.
Because of the addition of Nebraska to the league, 12 teams will play seven opponents twice and four once to maintain the 18-game schedule.
Dates and starting times of all games are scheduled to be announced in August.

Earlier tip times next season
The "ESPN family of networks" typically airs midweek games involving Big Ten teams at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Eastern time zone. In recent years, because of a contract giving networks "exclusive" rights to their broadcast windows, Big Ten Network had to schedule around those windows.
No more. Mark Rudner, the Big Ten's senior associate commissioner of television administration, told me this morning that "time period exclusivity" no longer exists, meaning BTN, CBS and ESPN broadcasts can overlap into each other's windows beginning this season.
What that means for ticket-buyers and viewers, conceivably, is that more games will tip off before 9 p.m. On nights that ESPN owns the 7 p.m. window, for example, BTN will not have to wait until 9 p.m. to start its game. It likely would start at 8 p.m., Rudner said.
"We think that's huge," he said. "It's something our (athletic directors) felt was important for us to pursue with ESPN. I think it's going to be huge for our fans to get some measure of relief from those late-night starts."
Rudner said the Big Ten has told member schools to expect the conference schedule "on or about" Aug.10. He also said the addition of Nebraska to the schedule means some conference games will be aired on ESPNU this season as well as ESPN, ESPN2, CBS and BTN.
Ohio State announced 12 of its 13 non-conference games in June. The remaining opponent and game won't be scheduled until the Buckeyes find out what their bye dates are during the conference season.
