Turner provides wake-up call for Buckeyes

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
In Evan Turner's opinion, a trip to Waffle House is the only thing worth waking up for at 7:45 a.m.
So after he stayed up late Saturday to watch Illinois knock another game off Michigan State's lead in the Big Ten standings, he wasn't thrilled to be roused at that early hour yesterday for Ohio State's noon tipoff against Iowa.
"But it happens," he said. "We came out, we competed and we got the job done."
It took a half for Turner and his teammates to shake their cobwebs -- "We'll move (the wakeup call) back next game," coach Thad Matta joked -- but it didn't cost them against the Hawkeyes. Turner scored 20 of his career-high-tying 32 points after halftime to lead No. 13 Ohio State to its seventh consecutive Big Ten win, 68-58 in Value City Arena.
Turner's point total tied what he scored in a victory at Purdue that started OSU's conference win streak Jan. 12. He also had seven rebounds, five assists and four steals and was turnover-free for the first time in 37 games.
After Iowa closed a 14-point deficit to eight, 51-43, with 7:41 remaining, Turner scored 14 of the Buckeyes' last 17 points, getting into the lane at will with a variety of moves that resulted in layups or free throws.
"You look at Evan's performance today, he made some special plays out there," Matta said. "That ranks up there as one of the best I've seen, just his all-around game and what he was able to get accomplished. I thought his pace and reading the situations was tremendous."
