Football: Buckeyes aim high, settle for Sugar
Players admittedly 'spoiled' but still glad to take part in bowls

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State 2010 schedule is posted at various places throughout the team's practice facility. After listing each regular-season game, the signs read "Jan.1, Rose Bowl" and, below that, "Jan.10, BCS national championship game."

There is no mention of the Sugar Bowl.

That doesn't mean, however, that the Buckeyes aren't appreciative of their Jan.4 date with Arkansas. It's just a sign of the high expectations that have been created in a program that views Big Ten titles as a baseline and competing for national championships as an annual occurrence.

This is a school, after all, that will make its ninth appearance in a Bowl Championship Series game in the system's 13 years, more than any other program (Oklahoma has eight, Southern California seven).

The Buckeyes are 5-3 in those games and are working on a streak of six years in a row.

"It's weird; we've been kind of spoiled with it, at least my class, just because it's all we've known," senior receiver Dane Sanzenbacher said. "'Bowl game' to us has come to mean 'BCS bowl' because we don't know what another one feels like."

OSU football: Sugar tickets go fast, but maybe to Arkansas

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State sold out its public allotment of Sugar Bowl tickets within 15 minutes yesterday, but Arkansas fans still might be in the majority at the Sugar Bowl.

Demand at both schools is high, officials say.

Each school was allotted 17,500 tickets. Both gave priority to their donors, season ticket-holders and other university groups.

The difference is that Arkansas had 24,000 pre-orders, and after accommodating all the above-named groups, the public had no crack at those.

Ohio State, meanwhile, had 1,500 tickets left for its public sale yesterday. Those were snapped up in 15 minutes, according to Brett Scarbrough, senior director of ticketing. That raised the question of whether many of Ohio State's tickets were purchased by Arkansas fans.

Arkansas QB Mallett's career comes full circle
Ex-Wolverine gets another shot at Ohio State

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS — The announcement late Sunday that Ohio State would meet Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl in early January was highlighted by the fact that the game in New Orleans would be the first time the two teams had ever faced each other.

That added an element of intrigue to the matchup of the No. 6 Buckeyes and the No. 7 Razorbacks, due to the apparent lack of familiarity.

But that is not quite the case. Ohio State (11-1) has already faced Arkansas' best player, its record-setting quarterback Ryan Mallett, who started his college career three years ago at Michigan.

"I thought I was done with Ryan Mallett," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel told The-Ozone.net, a popular Ohio State fan site, Monday.

Mallett (6-7, 238) was recruited to play for the Wolverines by Lloyd Carr in 2007, and as a freshman appeared in 11 games for Michigan as the backup to Chad Henne. Mallett started three games while Henne was injured, and won all of them, defeating Notre Dame, Penn State, and Northwestern.

Sugar Bowl is nice, but many Buckeyes wouldn't mind a BCS playoff that included Ohio State

Published: Sunday, December 12, 2010, 1:00 AM Updated: Sunday, December 12, 2010, 1:23 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State could be preparing for a college football playoff game with TCU next Saturday. That type of scenario sounded great to Buckeyes' junior center Mike Brewster.

"I'd love a playoff," Brewster said. "The way I see it, teams get better as the season goes on. Nobody plays their best football at the beginning of the season. Everybody is always getting better and if you're going to be the best team in the country, you need to play your best football at the end.

"So I'd have an eight-team playoff, or however they'd do it. Hopefully, [it will happen] someday, for these young guys in high school. I'll be an old man."

The debate over the college postseason is ongoing. In a preseason ESPN survey of 135 college football players, 62.2 percent wanted a playoff. But the majority of major conference commissioners, including Big Ten boss Jim Delany, on a panel in New York this week, continued their opposition.

I hope the Buckeyes come motivated and prepared for this game. No excuse not to. So you're not in the BCS national title game... get over it already... prepare like no other for Arkansas... you know they're preparing for us.
