Football: Buckeyes banged up as Boilermakers loom

The Columbus Dispatch

Three days removed from the loss at Wisconsin, No.10 Ohio State still is literally hurting as it prepares to take on Purdue, which upset the Buckeyes a year ago.

OSU coach Jim Tressel said today at his weekly media luncheon that outside linebacker Ross Homan could be out for a couple of games after suffering a foot injury in the first half Saturday night. Jonathan Newsome took his place and likely will against Purdue.

There also is the mysterious foot infection that has afflicted nickel back Christian Bryant. What started out as athlete's foot has escalated into a more serious condition for the freshman, insiders said. Bryant currently is receiving treatment at the OSU Medical Center and could be there through Thursday, Tressel said.

Bryant won't be available for Saturday's game for sure, the coach said. That means the Buckeyes might roll starting safety Jermale Hines into the nickel slot when the occasion calls for it, with Aaron Gant taking Hines' spot. Jamie Wood and Nate Oliver also have practiced at nickel in recent weeks.

OSU notebook: Foot infection will sideline Bryant

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State defense is losing nickel backs at an alarming rate. The Buckeyes will need to dip into the piggy bank to pull out another this week against Purdue because of the plight of freshman Christian Bryant.

They already knew they would be without senior outside linebacker Ross Homan the next few weeks after he suffered a foot injury in the first half Saturday at Wisconsin. Then it became apparent on the trip back that what they thought was a bad case of athlete's foot for Bryant had worsened into a serious infection.

"He's going to be in the hospital, I'm told, until Friday," OSU coach Jim Tressel said yesterday.

Bryant won't be available Saturday, which means the Buckeyes might roll starting safety Jermale Hines into the nickel slot when the situation calls for it, with Aaron Gant taking Hines' spot. Jamie Wood and Nate Oliver also have practiced at nickel in recent weeks.

The safety and nickel spots have been bitten hard by the injury bug this season. Starting safety C.J. Barnett suffered a season-ending knee injury in the win over Miami the second week, and No.1 nickel back Tyler Moeller was lost for the rest of the season in the fifth game at Illinois when he suffered a torn left pectoral muscle.

Boilermakers rediscover the run
Wednesday, October 20, 2010 02:50 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Purdue is celebrating its heritage as the "Cradle of Quarterbacks" this season by honoring a different one of its legends each week of the football season.

On the field, meanwhile, the Boilermakers are breaking with that tradition.

Halfway through their schedule, they have more yards rushing than they have passing and are averaging about eight more carries and eight fewer passes per game than they did in Danny Hope's first season as coach a year ago.

They are averaging 12 fewer passes per game than in Joe Tiller's final season as coach in 2008.

"When Tiller was here, we were the 'Cradle of Quarterbacks.' It was kind of basketball on grass," running back Dan Dierking said. "We were airing the ball out a lot. Running was kind of a second option.

Ohio State football: Purdue payback now due
Tressel's history shows he's a master at revenge

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 02:51 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Even before their wipeout in Wisconsin, Ohio State was going to be primed for Purdue this week. The memory of losing to a 1-5 Boilermakers team last year would have been enough.

"It's definitely a game that's been circled on our calendars," safety Jermale Hines said.

From 2004 to '08, OSU coach Jim Tressel has perfected the art of motivating players for a revenge game, as the Buckeyes have extracted their pound of flesh for every one of their six Big Ten losses in that span, winning all the rematches.

One of the old standby ploys is to put up clippings and reminders in the locker room.

"Oh, yeah, we've got stuff posted up all over the place," offensive tackle Mike Adams said yesterday. OSU lost 26-18 last season.

Tressel has lost 22 games at Ohio State, but the only time he has dropped back-to-back contests was in 2004, when the Buckeyes lost three straight.
