As turnovers mount, so do the losses for Purdue

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Purdue coach Danny Hope had a simple answer when asked if Purdue's turnover trouble has a common thread, be it a lack of ball security, bad decisions or just bad luck:

"Yeah," he said.

The thread has been all that and more. Consequently, finding a solution has not come as easily as Hope's answer.

Heading into the second half of their season Saturday with a home game against Ohio State, the Boilermakers rank last in the Big Ten and next-to-last among Football Bowl Subdivision teams with 20 turnovers. Only Miami University has more (22).

Since routing Toledo 52-31 in its opener, Purdue has lost five consecutive games in large part because of its offense and special teams repeatedly give opponents big plays or prime field position.

"We've had a series of events that have killed our football team and cost us some wins," Hope said yesterday.

• In a 38-36 loss at Oregon, the Ducks returned an interception and a fumble for touchdowns. Another interception, at the Purdue 13-yard line, set up a field goal.

Jack Looks Back
Boilermakers had up-close look on Archie's record-setting day

BuckeyeXtra.com

Editor's note: Jack Park, a leading Ohio State football historian, checks in on BuckeyeXtra.com each week during the college football season with a retrospective about the Buckeyes.

The 1975 Buckeyes won at Purdue 35-6 to stretch their season record to 7-0. The Ross-Ade Stadium crowd of 69,405 that Oct. 25 saw Archie Griffin become major college football's all-time rushing leader. The senior tailback rushed for 130 yards against the Boilermakers to increase his career total to 4,730 yards, 15 more than the NCAA mark set by Cornell's Ed Marinaro.

Fullback Pete Johnson got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard in a hurry, going 60 yards up the middle for his 17th touchdown of the season on OSU's first play from scrimmage. The big hole was opened when tackle Scott Dannelley neutralized Purdue's tackle, center Rick Applegate took out the middle guard and guard Ted Smith blocked the inside linebacker. Purdue's safety went for a fake pitch to Griffin, and Johnson was on his way. Interestingly, Griffin had kidded Johnson the previous evening about scoring on his very first carry of the afternoon.

Ohio State built a 21-6 halftime lead, increased the advantage to 28-6 after three quarters and scored the game's final touchdown on the first play of the fourth. But the best was yet to happen. After Ohio State's defense held Purdue on downs at the Boilermaker 38-yard line, the Buckeye offense returned to the field with 8:26 remaining.

Tressel, OSU wary of 1-win Purdue

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS – Ohio State coach Jim Tressel wants his team to be aware that the record of this week’s opponent – Purdue -- is more a result of a series of mistakes the Boilermakers have made than an indicator of Purdue’s potential strength.

The Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0) face Purdue (1-5, 0-2) on the road this Saturday, and at his weekly news conference Tuesday afternoon at the Jack Nicklaus Museum on the Ohio State campus, Tressel related what a review of Purdue’s game films had showed him.

“If they don’t have a turnover here or a special teams mistake there, who knows what their record would be,” Tressel said.

Purdue opened the season with a 52-31 win over Toledo, and then has lost close games to Oregon, Northern Illinois and Notre Dame, and suffered a 15-point loss at Minnesota last week.

Ohio State will be pursuing a Big Ten record-tying 17th straight road win when it takes on Purdue.

to honest i like the progress this line has made since week 1. at this point i wouldn't mind keeping cordle out. the chemistry of the line is getting better and i would rather see a younger guy get the reps.

Shugarts has been getting beat consistently............watch the film...........its time for Cordle to get back out there...............

Adams hasn't been doing much better on the other side really............

We had to keep our tight end and back in to help with protection against Wisky..........severly limiting TPs ability to get something accomplished through the air...........

Damn, just came on here to post this.

Anyways, I think we beat down Purdue pretty soundly. Already heard that a good number of Purdue fans have sold their tickets off to OSU fans so expect a lot of Scarlet an Gray in the crowd and probably an echoing "OH-IO" chant by the 3rd quarter.

OSU-34
Purdue-7 (which they get late in the 4th)
