When an offense shrinks the field for an undersized defense...........trying to run in an I tight formation when we had been successful spreading them out, well then you have to question the offensive play call on those two plays..........

Life preserver: Rolle's return for Ohio State thwarts Navy's spirited comeback attempt

Linebacker Brian Rolle saved the day for Ohio State when he intercepted Navy's two-point conversion try and returned it for two points. | More photos
Ohio State players said they feel better now about who's defending our country.
After yesterday's game, maybe they should be worried about who's defending the banks of the Olentangy River.
Navy came into Ohio Stadium and gave No. 6 Ohio State a serious scare, rallying from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to come within a failed two-point conversion attempt of tying the Buckeyes in the final minutes.
Only when linebacker Brian Rolle intercepted Midshipmen quarterback Ricky Dobbs' pass on the conversion try and raced 99 yards for two points could the Buckeyes exhale.
The 31-27 victory proved two points, one of which the Buckeyes embraced and one that should give them worry lines.
The positive spin: Navy was as tenacious as advertised, a hard-nosed bunch not intimidated by anyone.
The Midshipmen displayed that with a stunning 85-yard touchdown pass followed by Dobbs' 24-yard TD run up the middle that cut Ohio State's lead to 29-27 with 2:23 remaining.
"It's apparent why these guys defend our country, because these guys go to the whistle every play," linebacker Austin Spitler said. "They play hard, they're tough kids, they never gave up."

Rolle's no-blitz decision sparkles
Linebacker stops Navy's two-point conversion try

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
There's a time to blitz and a time not to blitz, and junior linebacker Brian Rolle made the correct call yesterday in Ohio State's 31-27 win over Navy.
The Midshipmen had just scored two touchdowns in less than four minutes to cut the Buckeyes' lead to 29-27 with 2:23 to play. But Rolle said he didn't let the pressure get to him as the Midshipmen lined up for a two-point conversion attempt.
"Maybe for a second I thought, 'Man!' but there's no need to panic now," Rolle said. "This is where defenses show who they really are. We had to step up and make a big play."
He had the option to blitz, "but I knew what they were running," Rolle said. The Buckeyes had practiced against the play, an inside pass, several times in recent weeks, and "that's what they ran," Rolle said.

Bob Hunter commentary: So was that one to get excited about?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEAL C. LAURON | DISPATCH
As the Navy football team looks on, the Buckeyes sing Carmen Ohio.
It was the kind of day that might test an optimist's commitment.
Might.
The questions and answers after Ohio State's 31-27 win over Navy yesterday showed that there are positive ways to view this game, even with No. 4 Southern California next on the Buckeyes' schedule.
The "adversity" the Buckeyes faced -- a nice way to say they almost blew it -- might actually help them against the Trojans, right? Isn't a "competitive game" a better tuneup than a blowout? And what about the lessons learned, the steps taken and the character shown by a defense that kept Navy from tying the score with a little more than two minutes remaining? Intercepting a pass on a conversion attempt and returning it 99 yards for two points is a sign of character, isn't it?
I'm not sure. I know that a pessimist -- or is it a realist? -- might have a different take: The Buckeyes' narrow win looks like an ominous sign when their next game is against a team that beat them 35-3 last season.
But maybe it isn't. The Midshipmen ran a triple-option offense, which the Buckeyes never see. That made defending it difficult. There's also no doubt that lots of good teams misfire in their openers.
Because of the circumstances, it's hard to know exactly what the game means and, unfortunately, the Buckeyes' postgame comments were mostly a celebration of the obvious: Buckeyes players and coaches found about a dozen ways to say they need to get better before they face the Trojans.

I would like to see some 2 TE shot gun for mations against USC. Florida uses this formation alot and it causes matchup problems and Terrelle can check off at the line if he fells USC will be blitzing...I especially would like to see Ballard on the LOS and Stoney as an H back infront of TP in the gun....it really opens up the possibilities which will be imortant against USC.
