Ohio State football: Berry no longer on team, his attorney says

Jaamal Berry is no longer a member of the Ohio State football team, according to R. William Meeks, a Columbus lawyer defending the running back in a misdemeanor assault case.

Berry was in Franklin County Municipal Court this morning for a pre-trial hearing, which was continued because his attorney is contesting the way police conducted a photo-lineup in the case.

A motion hearing will be scheduled to address Meeks' contention that the handling of the photo-array violated Berry's constitutional rights.

Berry is charged with assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors, for an Oct. 21 incident near the North Market. Justin M. Jerich, 21, of Westerville, reported that Berry hit him with a closed fist and then taunted him near a parking garage.

Berry expected to leave

Officially, running back Jaamal Berry remains on the Ohio State football roster.
But his status might be a matter of semantics.

According to attorney R. William Meeks, who is representing Berry in his misdemeanor assault case, the sophomore has been told that he’s no longer a part of the team. Berry’s high-school coach said the same thing.

“From the conversation he had with the coaches, it didn’t appear that they were excited about him being (there),” said Larry Coffey, coach at Palmetto (Fla.) High School, who spoke with Berry on Tuesday. “He took the lead from that, and his thought process was that it was maybe time for him to go in another direction.”

Berry was in Franklin County Municipal Court yesterday morning for a pre-trial hearing, which was continued because his lawyers are contesting the way police conducted a photo lineup. A motion hearing will be scheduled to address Meek’s contention that the handling of the photo array violated Berry’s constitutional rights.

Berry is charged with assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors, for an incident on Oct. 21 near the North Market. Justin M. Jerich, 21, of Westerville, reported that Berry hit him and then taunted him near a parking garage.

Meeks said Berry is not guilty of assault and placed the odds of the case going to trial at “50-50.” If there is a trial, Meeks said, it probably won’t happen for a couple of months.

Berry remains on scholarship, an Ohio State spokesperson said, but he has not worked out with the team since he was suspended after the incident with Jerich.
Berry is taking classes this quarter, and Meeks said Berry might finish the school year at Ohio State.

Berry came to Ohio State as a highly touted recruit. Rivals.com ranked him the fifth-best running back (56th-best player overall) in the class of 2009.

Before enrolling at Ohio State, Berry was arrested on a marijuana-possession charge, which later was reduced to a misdemeanor. Coffey, his high-school coach, said that charge shocked him because Berry hadn’t been in any trouble.

At Ohio State, Berry fought hamstring issues. After running for 266 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries in 2010, Berry was poised to compete for significant playing time last year, especially since Daniel Herron missed the first half of the season because of NCAA violations. But Berry’s hamstring flared up again during camp, and Jordan Hall and Carlos Hyde rose above him.

In September, Berry was taken to the OSU Medical Center emergency room for tests after he got into an altercation with a student on campus. He was held out of that week’s game against Michigan State but was reinstated the following week.

Coffey surmised that Berry’s disappointment with his season might have contributed to the off-field troubles.

“Those incidents were not handled by him in the best way,” Coffey said. “Jaamal is a really mild-mannered person. I’ve never seen him create an issue or be aggressive in a situation. The expectations he had for himself going to Ohio State and the reality of what took place may have gotten the best of him, and he may have made some rash decisions, maybe (reflecting) a little bit of frustration.”

Berry had only three carries for 7 yards in 2011. He also averaged 21.4 yards on seven kickoff returns.

“It was a wasted opportunity for him and for Ohio State,” Coffey said. “He had the opportunity to go anywhere in the country. He chose Ohio State, and it didn’t work out. Hopefully, he’ll go somewhere else and have success on and off the field.”

Berry did not respond to a request for comment.

With Herron graduating, Hall and Hyde will compete for playing time with freshmen Bri’onte Dunn and Warren Ball. Running back Rod Smith, who missed the team flight to the Gator Bowl and did not show up for the game, also remains on the team.

It is funny how much different perspective I have for ESPN.com, Dispatch, and my Scout Buckeye Bulletin that I get in the mail...

It's always yesterday's news now. Before, it was up to date (in my mind).

Now that I'm on SB, I always know Buckeye news before everybody else.

I love it!
