Bob Hunter commentary: Pryor is building new name for himself

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- School legends have been started with a lot less.

Terrelle Pryor's big day at Penn State had all the elements of a hokey made-for-television movie: Ohio State quarterback goes back to home state as Public Enemy No. 1 to play a favored Nittany Lions team he had spurned as a high-schooler. He plays with painful memories of his fumble that helped give Penn State a win last season in Columbus, with his left ankle aching and ears practically bleeding from the stuff the fans are yelling at him and has the best game of his young career.

"No words can explain how happy I am," Pryor said.

The sophomore was encased in a cocoon of reporters and cameramen, smiling and joking and sounding like a man who had just had the state of Pennsylvania removed from his back, which he probably had.

In the eye of a hurricane of derogatory T-shirts, negative news coverage and mounting pressure, Pryor passed for two touchdowns and ran for one, had his first real turnover-free game of the season -- New Mexico State doesn't count -- and led his team to a 24-7 upset win that has Ohio State squarely on the path to the Rose Bowl.

This was a moment. That much was apparent.

"It's huge," Pryor said. "They were making a big deal about it. They were doubting us, (saying) the Buckeyes can't do this and that, we slipped up at Purdue"

He used "we" a lot during the postgame interview, trying hard to get away from the notion that this was somehow about him. But it was hard not to see what this game was -- not only an atonement for past football sins but a coming-out party for the Jeannette native who was hailed as a future Heisman Trophy winner in high school.

Pryor: Knee scope more than expected

Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor said a routine surgery to strengthen a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament three weeks ago turned into a more extensive procedure once the doctor found unexpected issues.

Pryor, who revealed before the Rose Bowl he had been dealing with a slight PCL injury, said Sunday at a team charity event in Columbus, Ohio, that the arthroscopy was performed on his left knee, not the right as the school announced in early February.

"We just thought I'd strengthen it, but when Dr. [Chris] Kaeding went into it, there were a lot of things wrong with it," Pryor said, according to The Plain Dealer.

Pryor, who was expected to be back to 100 percent before spring practice in April, said he had resumed strength training but hadn't rejoined team workouts, according to the Cleveland newspaper.

"You lose a type of leadership," Pryor said of missing the team dynamic. "I laid at home for about five days and then I went in and started to do upper body [workouts]. My upper body got real weak because I was sitting at home taking pain pills and I lost a lot of weight because I wasn't really eating.

"So I'm going to start getting back with the team workouts," he added. "It kind of [stinks] because you can't work out with your team."
