Knights rout rival SaintsThomas shoots for 37 in rematch, nears Allen career scoring record
Greg Jones High school sports editor

Deshaun Thomas and Bishop Luers were ready for what Bishop Dwenger had to throw at them. It’s been only about two weeks since the two teams played in the SAC tournament semifinals.

So the Class 2A No. 2 Knights were ready for the physical play and the stingy zones of the 3A No. 4 Saints, and it showed in an 82-65 rout Friday.

“Each time you play them, you are pretty much going to see a solid game and a very disciplined team,” Luers coach James Blackmon said of playing Dwenger. “They bring out the best in each team. Our guys realized this was going to be a tough game. Dwenger has a reputation that if you don’t go out and compete, they are going to take advantage of it.”

Thomas scored 37 points and moved to within 38 of being the career boys scoring leader in Allen County.

SNIDER 66, BISHOP LUERS 56
Double win for PanthersThomas short of record; avenge SAC tourney loss
Greg Jones
High school sports editor

Deshaun Thomas came up short of the record book, and more importantly his team fell short on the scoreboard in a big SAC matchup against Snider.
After scoring 35 points in a 66-56 home loss to Snider on Tuesday, Thomas is three points short of the all-time Allen County boys scoring record.“Sometimes you have to motivate yourself, and sometimes you have to trust your teammates. (Tuesday) we didn’t indicate that at all,” Luers coach James Blackmon said of Thomas.
Thomas, who also had 18 rebounds, has 1,821 career points, just behind James Hardy’s 1,823. His next chance will be Friday at Northrop and former teammate Troy Amos.

Luers' Thomas sets scoring mark
Greg Jones
The Journal Gazette

The moment came at 6:40 of the first quarter. It took about four more seconds for the celebration.

With a three-pointer from the right corner in the first quarter against host Northrop, Bishop Luers junior Deshaun Thomas became Allen County's all-time boys scoring leader..

His three-pointer on his second shot attempt of the game gave him 1,824 career points, one more than ex-Elmhurst James Hardy's total of 1,823.

At 6:36 of the first, Northrop coach Barak Coolman called the 30-second

Record-breaking KnightThomas hits 3 in 1st to eclipse Hardy; Luers rallies in 2nd half
Steve Warden
The Journal Gazette

This is what hoop history looked like Friday: It was 6-foot-7 Deshaun Thomas holding the basketball low, then rising above everyone from the far right-hand corner. And when both came down – first the man-child, then the ball through the rim – the Bishop Luers junior became his uniform number of 1.
A three-point shot a minute, 19 seconds into the game Friday made Thomas the all-time leading scorer among Allen County boys. His 27 points at Northrop not only thrust his career total to 1,848 to surpass the short-lived record of 1,823 held by Elmhurst’s James Hardy, but they were instrumental in Luers defeating Northrop 76-69.
When Thomas’ record-breaking shot fell, it gave the Knights (10-3, 4-1 SAC) a 7-0 lead. Seconds later, Northrop coach Barak Coolman called a timeout – not to give Thomas his moment, in which he basked, including photos and receiving the game ball that he handed to his mother four rows up – but to regroup.

Scoring record was inevitable
Thomas seemed preordained to set mark
Greg JonesThe Journal Gazette

Inevitable.

That's what Friday night was all about.

Three points shy of becoming the all-time boys basketball scoring leader in Allen County, it was inevitable Thomas would break the mark Friday.

And as a basketball star since the seventh grade, it was inevitable that Thomas would be the player to set the new standard.

He fulfilled that prophecy with a three-pointer a minute and twenty seconds into the first quarter Friday at Northrop and achieved a milestone that most thought was a given for him.

"The way I saw him play in middle school, you had to think he was pretty unstoppable," said Les Howard, Thomas' middle school coach at Northwood. "I thought sometime during his junior season, he would probably break the record."

Deshaun Thomas leads Luers past Harding
He scored 33 - and surpassed his coach's scoring mark.

By Blake Sebring
of The News-Sentinel

There aren't a lot of milestones left for Deshaun Thomas to shoot for.

The Bishop Luers junior surpassed his coach Friday night, scoring 33 points to skip past James Blackmon's Marion career total of 1,897 by 10 points as the Knights held off Harding 75-68.

“That's what records are for,” Blackmon said. “He's putting himself in position where somebody is going to have to really work to come after his records.”
